AIRPORT SECURITY ENHANCED BY MEGAMANTIS Hamilton, New Zealand. Security in and around airports is about to get better with the development of Power Beat's Megamantis Technology. The Company has been highly focused over the past 24 months in an extensive Research and Development program centred around it's free space optical solution to video, data and audio transmission. "The technology is beginning to show the commercial potential originally envisaged after a live CCTV feed was established between Hamilton International Airport and Power Beat's Head Office" said Power Beat Managing Director Peter Witehira. "The test system has now been operating for nine months and is being used as a platform for product development based on airport security and other CCTV applications" said Mr Witehira. Power Beat will install further units coupled to high resolution cameras at other international airports as part of a rollout program. These units will be the final public demonstration of commercial free space optical systems under development at Power Beat using the Megamantis concept. The main advantages include relatively low cost, no radio spectrum licensing, multiple functions, compatible with all current video, data and audio equipment, no stray radiation or injury to humans possible and high bandwidth. "The fact that no cables or lasers are used, and that radio licensing is not required, makes this technology ideal for airport security, indeed, airport authorities can now install an unlimited number of high resolution cameras in, on and around the entire airport without causing interference to radio traffic or noise. There is no need to hard wire systems, yet the incoming pictures can be as clear as fibre systems" said Mr Witehira. Estimated cost of basic systems with up to 5 cameras will be between US$15,000 and $30,000 depending on requirements, exclusive of camera and recording systems.
